Is there a controversy regarding Lowell’s Christmas/Holiday lights? I am not talking about the secular versus religious issue but the one about the new lights in downtown Lowell.
There has been some talk on WCAP’s morning show, Dennis Shaughnessey had an article in yesterdays’ Lowell Sun quoting Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeanne Osborn , “”The thinking [upgrading the lights] was that we wanted to refresh the look of the downtown, but I think our understanding was that it would be done little by little…A mixture of the old and new.”
And then we had this discussion during last week’s City Council meeting:
The wreaths that were hung on the Victorian lights as well as along the downtown streets were fine but there is nothing wrong with some upgradign and change. What bothered me the most about the old Christmas decoration was how long the DPW left them hanging?
Many, many weeks after Christmas had come and gone.
Those new nets with the hint of mauve mixed in with the silver lights look nice. We just need a few more. Some of the businesses have really done a nice job with their store front and others, well they are not yet in the spirit of the season.
But I figure that if the quality of holiday lights in downtown Lowell is the major municipal issue this week, we must be a pretty good shape.

Interesting note - Shaughnessey’s hand was forced in writing that article which was slanted to reflect negatively on the CM. Shaughnessey was an instrument of belittlement…
Gotta stir the pot, I suppose - even if it’s only to sell more papers.

Sorry - but I don’t like the new lights, they don’t look at all “historic” . The whole downtown looks dark and depressing at night. Bring back the wreaths and the lighted trees. They looked more like the season.

If you think the quality of lights was a big deal, you’ll love the LFD/Swine Flu response controversy already playing on NECN and WCVB (plus today’s Sun piece also by Shaughnessy coincidentally). Can’t wait for Rita and Bud to educate us on their knowledge of infectious disease and emergency medical protocols next Tuesday. Huge non-issue.

Consensus here at the Moses Little house is that Maggie shacked it. Bring back the old and out with the new.

The nets downtown look like they are promoting surfing on ocean waves - they say nothing holiday like to me.

I drove through downtown last night and those new lights are so out of place…not sure where they belong. Except for City Hall, downtown looked bleak. Why aren’t individual business owners doing more to ‘dress up’ their store fronts?

It seems to me that I read someplace that the business owners had raised some money for new decorations- it’s just that the Manager or whoever totally b;ew the selection of decorations.

According to the SUN column, the city workers are refusing to string the lights in the trees during regular work hours, but will do it with overtime.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen happen in this regard for a long, long time. How about some holiday spirit as was the case in past years when the downtown was always showing it’s best holiday face! Next thing we’ll see now is that some moronic group will come forth to nix the annual nativity scene at the JFK civic center. If I were city worker and I was asked to take care of the lights, I’d be proud to do so.

In Billerica I believe the Ibew 103 donates their time. Maybe Lowell should look into it.
