Turnout Is King (Updated)

by at 11:08 am.

Finally it feels like we have an election going on. I swear, this morning, I saw three campaign commercials in a row. At the very least, that’ll serve as a constant reminder for people to get their butts out to vote. I think all this attention (ie excitement over the polls tightening) will backfire for the Republican. For one thing, he’s finally getting scrutinized.

A better turnout means good news for Martha Coakley, and frankly, after all the things I’ve heard about Brown, notwithstanding the fact that this guy will torpedo our best chance for health care reform in several generations right off the bat, I will be doing some work for Coakley on the GOTV campaign myself this weekend, and encourage others to do the same. I got this in my email, on two ways you can make phone calls:

1. From the comfort of your own home, you can use the myBO tool: www.my.barackobama.com/coakleyn2n
2. Join a local phone bank: Listings here www.marthacoakley.com/events

And of course make sure you vote on Tuesday, January 19!!

Update: I am told that there will be a Lowell phone bank at ERA Morrison, 61 Market St, Jan 14th through the 18th from 6:00-9:00pm.

Lynne I couldn’t agree more with you! This race is Coakley’s to lose and frankly I’m not sure she’s a “shoe in.” I think Brown’s out in the middle of the ring swinging hard and she’s got to counter punch or we’re in for some major trouble!

  2. Shawn Says:

Don’t worry, my vote will balance out yours.
Now its up to everyone else.

  3. BigDog Says:

Yeah Shawn and that’s the scary thing…your vote…brown on Washington would be a disaster…the sad thing is that neither of them is hitting on the issues that are most dear to us.

  4. Right In Lowell Says:

    I’m with you Shawn!

  5. The Mark Says:

As am I Shawn. My immediate family is voting 9-1 (the lone Coakly voter a teachers union member) for Brown, not to mention none of us ever miss an election- except the teacher can sometimes not care enough. That’s just one family.

  6. The Mark Says:

Whoops. Coakley. You say Massachusettes I say Massachusetts. You get my point right?

  7. Lynne Says:

Gee, the resident Republicans say they are with the Republican…shocker! Coakley better run for the hills now!!

    Just sayin’.

  8. Robby Says:

Martha is going to lose next Tuesday, and for the same basic reasons why certain councilors here in Lowell lost last November.

Coakley, who has been around the political scene for some time now, leaving one job to get to the next, thought that the seat (any seat) is hers for life. She feels like she is “entitled” to it, because, yes, she is a woman. Oh, and because that’s what the Kennedy family wants.

Truth to be told, We The People don’t care what Teddy wanted or anyone in the Kennedy family wants for that matter. We are sick and tired of these same-old same-old politicians thinking that they are elected for life. Its time for a change.

The issues have also hurt Coakley, deeply. No matter what way you want to spin it, We The People DONT WANT this health care bill. Its not that we dont need health care reform; we certainly do, but we need the right bill. Not something made during a rush in the back room where special deals were made, politicians being bought and sold, etc. What happened to the change that we all voted for last November? This is certainly not it, and Coakley will not do a damn thing to change things.

Passing a bill simply for the sake of passing ANYTHING isn’t change, and the people know it.

The attempted terror attack last month was a big wake up call for this country. We are still at war, and we are going to be at war for some time to come. Coakley supports closing Guantanomo and giving these human scum the same rights as we Americans. Terrorists are not US citizens and have no rights under our Constitution. Guantanomo should be kept open indefiniely, now is NOT the time to close it.

Martha will lose next Tuesday, and it is nobody’s fault but her own.

  9. The Mark Says:

Almost as shocking as you voting for the D each and every time. You don’t know the family dynamic but of the 9 votes only 2 come for GOP members….

  10. Lynne Says:

“She feels like she is “entitled” to it, because, yes, she is a woman.”

Wow, talk about a sexist statement. “She’s a woman politician, therefore she must assume that she deserves a seat because she’s a women.”

I am personally insulted. There is NOT ONE shred of evidence of this being true.

BTW, the people loved Ted Kennedy, and they liked how he voted too. So I don’t think that the majority of voters would do the opposite of what Ted wanted or what his family wants simply because they want to oppose him. “People” aren’t sick to death, you are. You’re projecting.

The peopel DO want the health care bill, *when* they know what’s in it. THings like killing all notion of using a preexisting condition to deny someone care or kickin someone off of coverage once they get sick. It’s only in the abstract that people poll less in support - because of the *rhetoric*, not the issue. THEY WANT a public option by the way. Overwhelmingly. You wanna cite polls, at least get them right.

And this state supports the rights of people UNDER our Constitution. You know the Constitution? It’s the thing on paper that Republicans only are for when it talks about their right to carry guns. If it’s about due process, freedom from warrentless wiretapping and the like, they’re perfectly happy to throw it out the window. How very patriotic of you.

    Lynne:

It was Coakley’s own supporters who claimed that we should support Martha because she is a woman and we have never had a woman senator before. This was said from a campaign worker for Coakley, it was on TV about a month ago. I will not support a candidate based on thier gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Perhaps my phrase was not worded the best. But her being a woman has zero effect on me at all, in my opinion, it means nothing.

Like I said, people do want health care reform, but they want it done correctly. You state that people do not know whats in the bill. How are we? Have you seen what the bill physically looks like? No one knows whats in it; even those senators who will be voting on it, which is the scary part. People want it done right. People want to know what is going to happen to thier health care and how it will effect thier taxes or employers taxes. Right now, there are no answers. Just this mass “rush” to pass a bill, any bill, just for sake of doing something.

As for terrorists, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. I do not want to see terrorists who killed our people to be put in our prisons, while being supported by our taxes along the way. They do not belong in this country, they do not deserve to be in this country. For wiretapping, I have never said anything about it. But don’t insult my patriotism just because you have a different opinion.

That’s what makes this country so great, after all. :)

  12. Gerry Nutter Says:

The people know what’s in it and DON”T want the Health care Bill especially when it includes the carve outs for Nebraska, Louisiana and other states which represent hundreds of millions of dollars.

As part of the effort to expand insurance coverage, the bill increases Medicaid enrollment by 15 million by 2019. The cost of that expansion will be shared by state and federal governments except in Nebraska, where the federal government will pay for all of the new enrollees. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., agreed to vote to start debate on the bill after scoring a $300 million bump in Medicaid funding for her state..Just a little payout among friends.

So after blowing a huge lead the embarrassed Democratic Party needs to bring in Bill Clinton, Vicki Kennedy, Deval and Obama just to try to save face and save the majority which is bankruptcy the working class families.

There was a song thirty or so years ago called “We’ll remember in November when we Vote” It is a perfect song designed to make sure that we don’t re-elect those politicians who failed to live up to their campaign promises. Wish we had a copy to share.

  13. nextyearishere Says:

With Democrats racing to finish their health bill, the deal critics called the “Cornhusker Kickback” is still roiling the Senate.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat, negotiated a deal shortly before the Senate approved its health bill in December that would require the federal government to pay permanently for Nebraska’s portion of the cost of expanding Medicaid under the bill.

Nelson sent a letter Friday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) asking that the provision, which Republicans denounced as unseemly horse-trading, be changed.

He said he never intended for Nebraska to get special treatment. In the letter, Nelson said he wanted the provision replaced with aid for all states to help them offset the costs of the Medicaid expansion or opt out of it.

  14. Right In Lowell Says:

I grew up in a family who would vote Democratic no matter what. Those same family members are fed up with the Dems and are voting for Scott Brown. I don’t remember who said it but it’s so true… “the Democratic party used to be champions of the working people, now they are only champions of the people who don’t work”.
I have not spoken to anyone, young or old, who is for the health bill as it is written.
