The Lowell Sun breaking news section reports that City Manager Bernie Lynch has selected Henri Marchand as his new assistant.
The Sun writes of Mr. Marchand: “…56, a life-long Lowellian, is a community relations associate at UMass Lowell and had served as the producer of Sunrise, the university’s morning radio talk show for four years. He spent 18 years working for the Lowell Plan, the last 11 as the assistant director.”
Interesting! Congratulations and best wishes Mr. Marchand in your new position.

Wow! Talk about out of the blue, and totally hush hush (good job not feeding the rumor mill!).
Congrats to Henri, he has some big shoes to fill but I think he can handle it.

A radio talk show producer?
The Sun’s Sunrise invovement lasted about a year before the paper decided radio was harder than they thought and pulled out, then the university tried for a couple of years and abandonded it as well.
Before that worked at the Lowell Plan for 18 years?
Sorry Bernie…you could have/should have done better.

Eleanor, I’d like to furnish a little more info. Henri Marchand was also the best Downtown Lowell Coordinator Lowell ever had. Henri was always there when you needed help and also worked festival of lights and other festival activities long before Andy St Onge. He’s been around a long time and knows all the players.

Well, its his choice, but surprising based on resume. Let’s hope he produces quickly.

As someone who has known and worked with Henri, and as a lifelong Lowellian,I think he is a very solid choice. Eleanor, he is far more than a radio producer. This is an assistant’s job, not leader of the free world. Who would you have hired, Scott Brown?
January 21st, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Given Scott Brown’s success, maybe…given Henri Marchands lack of success on the Sunrise show…no.
The move begs the question, why? He has a nice job with UMarty with lots o bennies…why do this?
Why would Bernie do this?
I need more information before I can say this is anything more than business as usual…what did Armand Mercier say when the position was eliminated? Give it a few months and we’ll add it back…
Sorry, I am not buying into the best candidate for the job was sitting right here all along…
Maybe we should get VB from Fox?

I miss Sunrise.

Sunrise wasn’t a success not because of production, but because it got its legs cut out from under it several times. Sunrise was a very good program that I enjoyed listening to, and frankly I learned a lot there about what UML professors and students were up to. Now, I have no clue. *shrug*
So, wait, now we have a -b, a bd, and a b as commenters? I think the rest of the alphabet is feeling lonely, guys!

Excellent choice. Perhaps a much better perosnality than Sheehan.

Having known Henri for years, I can tell you that his “perosnality”, character, and ability is completely different from Sheehan’s. He is certainly an easy going and likeable enough person, and I have no doubt he will make a more pleasant difference.
However, I’m quite surprised that no one has thought to consider that (1) the CM is appeasing the need for a Lowellian to be in this role (he seems to have got the message agout avoiding outsiders), and (2) the CM is appeasing the need to improve relations with the University.
Regardless, I think he will make a good fit.

Congrats to Henri! He brings different skill sets than Sheehan had, but the same level of professionalism. And, his being a devout life-long Lowellian is an asset to us citizens. He cares deeply about neighborhood issues without being overly provincial. Great choice in the post gang of six era.

Hi Lynne,
Indeed, “Sunrise” was a wonderful program that is certainly missed. If you are interested in keeping up with what UMass Lowell professors and students are up to, I invite you to check out the online magazine, www.uml.edu/enews.
