He’s probably coming to help us celebrate our Winterfest this weekend. Check our websites and come enjoy the festivities.

  2. Mimi Says:

    Fran:

Why does Chelmsford have a Winterfest the same weekend’s as Lowell?

If you guys keep this up, we will cut off your water. :-)

  3. Lynne Says:

    *lol* Mimi.

I hate to say it, but I will appear at neither Chelmsford’s nor Lowell’s Winterfest…I wish you all the best of it…but I boycott winter. :)

  4. Christopher Says:

His Excellency will then proceed to a similar event at the Andover Senior Center.

RE: Comment #2 - Don’t mess with Lowell regarding water; they threatened Dracut’s rights about a century ago to extort more land from us!:)

  5. Fran McDougall Says:

Mimi,we use well water in our districts. No Lowell water. The bigger threat would be to shut off our sewage on its way to the treatment plant in Lowell. While I’m on that point, the smell from that facility has always been a problem but in recent weeks as I drive on Andover St., the smell, even with my windows closed, gets into my car.Jim and Anabel must smell it. I thought they corrected that problem.

  6. Kim Says:

I have always loved the winterfest activities for the children at the Tsongas. This years venue at the Lowell High School cafeteria was much too small and crowded. The fireworks were incredible though. I hope this venue will be relocated next year and maybe they will use more of the highschool. Darn arena transfer!

  7. Fran McDougall Says:

It was good to get a new and fresh Governor “fix” at the Java room yesterday. Love that guy. I wish the police union in Chelmsford would take the time to have a reasonable discussion with the the public concerning their points of contention with the Governor. Unreasonable, angry, confrontational, in your face, protests are not the way to go in 2010. Those tactics went out with Boss Tweed. I have been on many picket lines myself as a loyal AFL member and would never cross a picket line of a union and group of people I hold in high respect. This Flynn tatic, including his support of Browm, will never have my sympathy. Chelmsford guys please call me and let me know what I might do to help.

  8. Lynne Says:

Here’s my problem: some, maybe most of those guys wouldn’t vote for Patrick anyway, and probably didn’t in 2006. Look, I know they are looking out for their best interests, but I wish they’d put the selfishness on hold for one frigging second and think about how they look protesting small reform changes like civilian flaggers which TAXPAYERS like. They’re taxpayers too, you’d think they’d stop and think for ONE moment. Sometimes, unions are their own worst enemy. Sigh.

Holding up the visit with local people at a coffee shop to YELL at the Governor is no way to get your point across. They looked like babies out there.

  9. Corey Says:

    Hi Lynne and Mimi,
Not every police officer has issues with the details, the larger argument is reduction of education incentives. I could go on at nausea with specific reasons on how these pay cuts could affect law enforcement and public safety, however, it is not the character of the thread. I will say… unwise and not very progressive.

As for being babies, they have every right to voice their displeasure especially if they voted for him. I did see them confrontational but not selfish. Because what their talking could be up to a 25% pay cut for some. Mimi, really-really not the way to go in 2010 when it comes to already strained and depleted local law enforcement.

Lynne, I noticed a 2005 Globe article, where you found him impressive and brave for supporting the Cape Wind project. Later campaigning for him and quoting you of his campaign… “They trusted us to do the job, They gave us directions. They gave us training. They gave us support.”

Deval Patrick’s administration is providing very little trust, direction, training or support to the municipal and state police officers that supported him. In my mind, he appears either disingenuous or using uniformed public opinion to save money at a cost to public safety. I’m not surprised officers are angry, because they have an intimate reality of what‘s at stake and wanna let people in our communities know.

  10. Lynne Says:

That’s a nice sentiment, Corey, but that’s not what I was hearing out of the one sided screaming match outside of the coffee shop. *shrug*

  11. Kim Says:

“Here’s my problem: some, maybe most of those guys wouldn’t vote for Patrick anyway, and probably didn’t in 2006″

Most of these men and women would vote for a candidate that supports a fair wage for working men and woman. Deval has done little in support of public safety. If you believe that these men and women do not deserve every penny they make then I think that is just dead wrong. After following the actions of Deval I think he has shown zero respect for the job. I will not vote for him again. If you want a level headed family man to risk his life for the same wage I make it just is not going to happen and you will get what you pay for.
I would love to see Stephen Lynch or Tim Murray on the ballot.

  12. nextyearishere Says:

Be careful what you wish for, as Tim Cahill has already stated that local aid would be offered up to balance his budget, and Charlie Baker will be looking to cut taxes first.

  13. Christopher Says:

One piece of advice for the Governor’s people: Remember when scheduling a venue that he is not “Deval Who?” this time. Parking at the Java Room was a bit difficult and more people should be expected to show up for these things than this time four years ago.

As for the police I can’t comment on the merits, but at least it seemed like they were having a chat outside with the Governor, which is much better than the rudeness and heckling we’ve seen this year. The Governor was not shouted down during his remarks inside.

  14. Lynne Says:

That’s because those guys with the “Dump Deval” signs and bumper stickers left before he came inside, Christopher.

Outside, there was a dude shouting at the Governor instead of actually having any sort of conversation. For his part, Patrick listened. For a long time. While everyone else waited.

  15. Lynne Says:

Oh and Kim, that’s all well and good, and your prerogative, but I’d love to know what mythological money you think is going to pay for all the magical goodies everyone wants.

I mean, do we cut the school budget? Do we take a slice of the pie from the homelessness programs or the health care subsidies for the poor?

It’s great to have such a narrow focus of “me me me and me” but seriously, I want to know what *you* would cut and where you would move the money from in order to fund the stuff you want. I don’t see that police officers are really hurting, except in so much as there have been some layoffs, like everybody else, and less money for training, like everybody else. And I hope you realize that complaining about the civilian flaggers situation is not going to really get you much sympathy either from most taxpayers, given the rest of the country works that way, and especially when it didn’t really apply across the board anyway.

  16. Christopher Says:

    RE Comment #14

OK, I was inside before the Governor was and didn’t realize there was shouting. What I observed was the Governor taking time to engage rather than walking right past them, which I respect him for doing. It’s still better than coming inside and trying to shut down the Governor a la last summer’s “Town Hells”.

  17. Lynne Says:

Yeah…Christopher, when I walked by these guys with their Dump Deval signs and the yelling, I was pretty intimidated actually. It was a pretty rude display.

  18. Kim Says:

Maybe they should increase my taxes?
