Lowell Politics and the LHA Board

by at 7:14 pm.

The Lowell Sun column (cannot link to it because the paper has chosen not to provide this popular item free of charge on line) had a lengthy piece on the Lowell Housing Authority (LHA) Board of Commissioners, specifically the seat currently held by James Hall. You may need a score card to understand the players, the motivation, the intrigue, the machination…Lowell politics at its best or at its worst, depending on your point of view.

Here is the short version: Hall’s appointment expired last month. This particular commissioner appointment is made by the Governor. Mr. Hall used to be a registered Republican, now is a registered Democrat. Meanwhile, Bob McMahon used to be on the LHA Board but when his term was up, the current City Manager did not re-appoint him. Mr. McMahon, who is currently the Manager of the SAC Club, wants his seat back and he has solicited the aid of his son and others to lobby the current governor. I know I am not doing justice to the piece in the Column. You really should read it to get the full flavor.

The Column makes reference to “local Democrats…ramping up the pressure.” It is not clear to me if they are ramping up the pressure to remove Hall and re-appoint McMahon or simply to remove Hall. Also, I am not sure who these “local Democrats” are. And who decides who is the “good” Democrat? I understand how politics works, you appoint your allies. I hope whoever the Governor chooses, it is someone with some credentials, not merely someone who wants to get on the Board so that they can beat up on the Executive Director.

Sounds like Cox + (Campy * Kazanjian) = Mc Mahon.

  2. K-R-S Says:

Ding, Ding, Ding..Prince Charming has WON the prize!

  3. Right In Lowell Says:

You have my email and I have access to the electronic edition (tried it out for sh*** and giggles since it was only $4 for the year). Let me know if you want any links.

  4. Elenaor Rigby Says:

I know this is a naive question, but wouldn’t the Governor consult with Bernie Lynch before making the appointment?

  5. Prince Charming Says:

Why would the governor appoint someone to beat up the executive director when the exeutive director’s father endorses people for governor?

  6. K-R-S Says:

To Eleanor..this is a guvs appointment…to Prince Charming..Has the Lowell Sun ever endorsed Deval, outside of a primary? Seriously, can’t recall if they endorsed Deval or O’Reilly.

On another note, I also submitted my resume and request for appointment to the LHA board. I dare the Guv to match my resume against the “beverage” manager from the SAC Club.

    KRS
You may be the Gov’s savior in this mess. Careful what you wish for.

Right now he is caught in the middle between the Hall supporters (and Atty. Hall has been around a long time and has many friends) and the Pat McCarthy led McMahon supporters (I’m sure Jon Cox and a few of the current Reps would be in that group). Add in the fact that the City Manager does not support McMahon and current LHA member Buddy Flynn and McMahon are like water and oil the Gov. is in a no win spot.

If you are qualified as you state ,you would give him the perfect ecape plus appointing a women gives the Gov. some political points

Very Smart move on your part if you are interested in serving.

    Good Luck

  8. Right In Lowell Says:

KRS… unfortunately, when the phone don’t ring, you’ll know its Deval.

  9. Joe Says:

    Nutter

Do you really think anyone with a 1/2 a bit of common sense listens to a idiot like Pat McCarthy he is nothing but a walking talking fool he is McMahons court jester

  10. Gerry Nutter Says:

    Joe,
Did I say anyone listen to him? NO !

I just stated what the paper did that Pat McCarthy who is a Big DEVAL supporter was in McMahons Corner.

But as usual thanks for adding so much to the conversation.

  11. Lynne Says:

    Go Joe Go !!!

  13. KMM Says:

The SUN also has a way of using a headline so as “not” to attract the attention of readers.
“Chelmsford businessman settles suit over property funds”
I suspect anyone glancing at the headline would never guess it contains information about Mr. Poulton and Mr. McMahon.

  14. Prince Charming Says:

K- I’m not saying that the Sun loves Deval. I’m saying that Deval may need the Sun. As for you serving on the board, take your snake repellant with you. It’s a den of vipers.

  15. Lowell Dem Says:

KMM- How does this relate to the LHA? Irrelevant if you ask me.

  16. Prince Charming Says:

    KRS - you’re 38? I thought 28.
