Once an FOB, always an FOB

by at 10:28 pm.

Having just returned home after traveling for a week, I see that School Committeewoman and fellow blogger Jackie Doherty made Kendall’s column the opportunity to try to answer him on her blog.

Kendall, who has been a long-time friend and supporter of Lowell High School Headmaster wrote the following:

Few schools have the history of LHS nor the dedicated staff of the school. I doubt if any other high school has as big an endowment fund or the widespread community support from alumni and business leaders.

With those facts, it never ceases to amaze me to see how some members of the School Committee treat school officials.

Apparently School Committee member Jackie Doherty really stunned high school administrators last week when she implied an extensive report, filed by the staff in response to a number of questions posed by the committee, was an insult to the school board.

Her remarks baffled a few people, including some colleagues, who took the time to personally thank the staff for their effort.

Now we have to remember that Kendall has successfully used his column in particular and the Sun newspaper in general , (IMHPO), to participate in the successful effort to drive out the previous School Superintendent Karla Brooks Baehr.

I do not think that Kendall’s comments will silence Jackie and stop of her from doing the job that the people of Lowell elected her to do.

And for her part, she writes on her blog that not everything at the Sun is bad. She continues to tell us of her visit with the editor. I do agree with her that the Sun has expanded its coverage on school issue; a welcome change. However, I found it interesting that when Jackie made reference to the “gown and cookies” inspired Lowell rumor, the editor remarked “So, you believe what you read in the blogs.” Now why would someone who publicly stated that he does not read the local blogs care about what is being written in them?

I was at the school committee meeting when Jackie asked for a report on the number of students passing the AP test. ( A valid question to know if the curriculum is working) Dave Conway went into an instant defensive mode about how this report is too much work for the school administration. I think the time for “hiding” information from parents has come to an end. So sorry to Mr Conway if it takes a little work to gain a bunch of effeciency and improve students test scores.

When Campanini greeted me outside his office yesterday morning, I held out a small bag and announced: “I baked you muffins because I heard it would get me good press!” Someone laughed behind me, but Campy’s face froze. “It was a joke,” I said. “I’m kidding.” He retorted, “So, you believe what you read in the blogs!? Where’s the gown?”

Two comments… A) he didn’t say it didn’t happen, and B) only people who are insecure can’t take a little goodnatured ribbing from someone who is obviously joking.

    Doth protest too much…

Also, damned hilarious!!! Also, don’t say something rude or stupid to someone who writes on their own blog. Rita Mercier found this out a long time ago.

Campy and I have had plenty of public and private disputes in the past, and I expect they will continue. He knew I was going to post about our meeting, though, especially the part about the improvements in local coverage, because I told him so that day. (God’s knows, all he ever gets from me is criticism; it seemed time to give credit when it’s due.) In terms of my remark about the muffins, once he realized I was kidding, he gave it right back to me, which I was trying to show with the quotes. Perhaps we should all try to take ourselves a little less seriously…I’ll start with myself.

I’m not sure Campy needs the high-fiber muffins but Kendall and Peter Lucas do.

I’m glad Ms. Doherty made that joke and wrote about it on her blog. It’s important for Campi and others to realize that the people of Lowell aren’t blind. We are all aware of the personal alliances that exist based on family ties, friendship, neighborhood, former jobs, etc. It’s natural for those alliances to form and in most cases they don’t cause any harm.

The problem comes when a journalist’s ability to report the truth seems to be clouded by those ties. Campi SHOULD be uncomforatable that the apparently close relationship he has with the superintendent is common knowledge at this point. Maybe he’ll take a minute to realize how that looks and return to the high level of scrutiny he had for the former administration.

I always thought that reporters reported and editors and columnists wrote. I take everything in columns with a grain of salt, for I feel that’s someone’s opinion. I rarely read editorials for the same reason. I’ll make up my own mind, thank you. The line gets blurred when reporters are assigned to a story and slant it towards their editors. Campy and Kendall have opinions and that’s all they should be. What’s more disturbing is when you hear stories of reporters in the tank with certain pols.

I’m with Kim on this one. Why should a personal relationship between Kendall Wallace and Bill Samaras and evidently supported by Dave Conway get in the way of parents knowing how their kids are doing? We should never believe solely in what those who have a vested interest tell us. Give us the data and let us decide. In the age of databases and rapid information, if this is such a hassle for school personnel to get to the school committee, then we are indeed in sad shape as a community.

  8. Prince Charming Says:

and speaking of Friends of Kendall, which Taupier property will the new charter school be located in?

  9. Mill Girl Says:

    PC,

From what I hear the reporters usually do put the facts in their articles and the editing goes beyond wordsmithing into creative writing. If you had a few beers with the bull pen, you’d hear how some of their stories get slanted after the fact.
