Reality vs Tax Fantasy

by at 12:54 pm.

No wonder the mob has gone after David Frum. In this article, which looks at a survey done about the perceptions of tea party protesters, we find out why, exactly, they think there’s a tax crisis in the country. Hell, if I thought 40% of GDP was going to just the federal government, I might be out protesting too!

Tuesday’s Tea Party crowd, however, thought that federal taxes were almost three times as high as they actually are. The average response was 42% of GDP and the median 40%. The highest figure recorded in all of American history was half those figures: 20.9% at the peak of World War II in 1944.

They are also hugely wrong on the percentages of taxes on a $50,000 salary.

The other common assumption is that taxes have gone up under Obama. W.R.O.N.G.:

Tea Partyers also seem to have a very distorted view of the direction of federal taxes. They were asked whether they are higher, lower or the same as when Barack Obama was inaugurated last year. More than two-thirds thought that taxes are higher today, and only 4% thought they were lower; the rest said they are the same.

As noted earlier, federal taxes are very considerably lower by every measure since Obama became president.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this survey is all about the perceptions about the federal government, not local and state. So added together, the numbers for total taxes go up a bit, obviously. But if you think about it, once under Bush you reduce even the moderate tax rates under Clinton, but you still have the same number of kids to educate, the same numbers of fires in buildings, the same amount of roads to repair, buses to run, and impoverished kids to feed, or hey, even more than you had, the local and state governments have to make up the shortfall somewhere. That somewhere ends up being our local property taxes in the end.

However, make no mistake - the tax rate under Clinton was merely moderate. Under Bush, they became, historically, extremely skinny. And we paid for it in the form of perpetual federal deficits, debt, and zero room to react to a bad recession. But don’t tell a teabagger that. They won’t listen.

Tens of millions of Americans are now starting to fill out their 2009 tax returns, and discovering that they got a nice, big tax cut from the Democrats.

Making Work Pay Tax Credit FTW!

  2. Lynne Says:

There you have it in a nutshell…Democrats want to tax the lazy money (money sitting around making money) and Republicans want to tax productivity, the people who work hard for their money. The shifts in tax burden as to who is paying more tax proportionately changes accordingly when one or the other comes to power, but poor and middle class white males are still voting Republican, despite the fact THEY get taxed harder under them!

And yet the Republicans’ general perception of anyone who isn’t rich is, well, they don’t deserve to be rich, they didn’t work for it.

    Sigh.

Talk about not deserving to be rich. Let’s look at all the trust fund limousine liberals. The Kennedy’s love to tell us how much we should love taxes because none of them have worked a day in their life. Joe sidles up with Hugo Chavez and collects a million a year. But I know he has earned it with all those personal oil deliveries. You want to talk about the tax issue and I must admit you have read your talking points (I guess you get them with the stimulus check in the mail)actual income taxes have not increased but other taxes and fees are coming and fast. Collect sigs for the most inept governor in history I didn’t think it was possible to make me yearn for the days of Jane Swift but Deval “yes we can.” Maybe he’ll raise the sales tax again because it worked so well the first time.

…so, to sum up, get off my lawn!

  5. Lynne Says:

    LMAO, joe! Too true.

People like the Kennedys are perfectly happy to be taxed. They realize how lucky they are in life and that others are no so lucky. The fact that the Kennedy family works so hard for working people and the poor, despite the fact that they could totally ignore them if they wanted to, shows compassion and grace, not selfishness. Only a conservative could see a rich liberal as selfish, and a selfish rich conservative as “he earned it he should keep it.” Double standard much?

If I were to (god knows how) become a millionaire, I hope that I would have the same amount of consideration for others that the Kennedys have shown in their lives. You know what, bud? Get over it.

Your right Lynne how could I have been so calous I guess they are happy to be taxed I guess that is why when Rose passed away they claimed her residence was Florida not Taxachusetts even though she had not been to Palm Beach in over 10 years. Oh wait, the tax rate is lower in Florida. Liberal hypocricy strikes again!
