Now who is being petty?

by at 10:01 pm.

Loyalty is a character trait that I admire. However, Kendall Wallace continuing to discuss in his columns his good friend, former Lowell High Headmaster Bill Samaras, is taking it to a new level.

In my opinion, Kendall helped, through his columns in the paper and his connections, to allow his friend to retire on his own terms. I have come to terms with that even though (IMHO) it cost Dr. Karla Brooks Baehr her job. But life goes on and I should let it go.

But Kendall’s comments in last Saturday’s column made me want to shout enough is enough.

At least one member of the committee called Superintendent of Schools Chris Scott to complain that departing Lowell High Headmaster Bill Samaras ‘set up an office’ in the High School after his official retirement on June 30. Samaras worked right up to the final minute of his last day. When he didn’t finish all his notes on time, he brought his laptop to the school library where he was going through files, sorting out reports and documents that might be helpful to his replacement, which resulted in a complaint from one of his ‘superiors’.

What is wrong with a School Committee asking the Superintendent for an explanation? Did Dr. Scott use the word “complain” in her call to Mr. Samaras? And yes, a sitting School Committee member is the “superior” of the LHS Headmaster in our current structure.

And Kendall finishes his commentary with this sentence: “I have little doubt if Samaras chose to run for the School Committee he would top the ticket.”

Now who is being petty?

Not sure I get this post and why it is relevant. He was staying on past when he was supposed to and this was a problem? Most people would read this as dedicated.

  2. Mimi Says:

    Kim:

I am not disputing Mr. Samaras’ dedication; I am sure he will continue to serve the City in some capacity. I just wish Kendall would give it a break when it comes to anyone saying anything remotely critical of his friend.

And as far as staying on after he was supposed to, I guess I am looking through the private sector lenses; when there is a change in leadership, the transition timetable and plans are clearly communicated to the Board of Directors.

  3. Maggie Says:

Oh for heaven’s sake- Samaras was trying to leave everything in good order for his successor. Give it a break.

  4. Mill Girl Says:

I personally think he’s hanging around to keep the new guy from figuring out where all the bodies are buried. :)

  5. New Lowellian Says:

He had 19 years to put things in order and I’m sure he doesn’t want to see the new guy make any changes. But that’s not the point that Mimi is making…Kendall Wallace prevents anyone from cricitizing his friend. Is anyone really as perfect as the Lowell Sun makes Samaras out to be?

  6. JC Says:

    Kendall Wallace has a friend.

Kendall Wallace sticks up for and supports his friend.

Kendall Wallace’s friend just completed a zillion years of service to the Lowell School System.

Kendall Wallace’s friend stayed late at school in order to do the right thing, finish all his homework, and make sure his successor had everything he would need to get off to a good start.

Kendall Wallace’s friend served the people of Lowell with great diligence, distinction, and longevity.

Kendall Wallace’s friend is indeed fortunate to have Kendall Wallace as such a staunch and loyal friend.

Friendship is a beautiful thing. I see nothing to criticize here. I do see much to envy.

  7. Prince Charming Says:

Kendall has a friend who’s “big” into real estate.

Kendall has a couple other friends who renovate old buildings.

Kendall has another indicted friend who owned a large piece of useless property and unloaded it to the charter school, where his “big” friend sits on the board.

Kendall’s other friend Samaras had a problem with his boss a few years back. She was run out of town on a rail.

Kendall, who owned the property that the School Department moved from? Who represented the charter school and presented an offer for the Rogers School building? Who tried to make the cash-poor city look stupid by turning down a few million for that run-down school building? Who ended up selling the Prince property to the charter school?

If you want to know the answer to any of these questions, it’s the same five guys.

  8. JC Says:

    Riddles!!!

I love a good riddle, PC.

Let’s all put our thinking caps on and go right to work on this one, boys and girls!

  9. Prince Charming Says:

It’s not a riddle, man. It’s connect the dots. It’s right there for all to see and Kendall flaunts it weekly.

  10. K-R-S Says:

Gotta’ love Prince Charmings comments.:0) No need to put thinking caps, it’s “all there in black & white”.

  11. K-R-S Says:

so what I got from this article was that, the issue was that an employee who had retired and had legally left his position, was still on site to work, post employment-end-date.
A school Cttee person reported on this issue to the employee they hired (the Supt)who oversees said employee (because there were likely complaints from staff/constituents…and somehow this situation is construed as a vendetta against a *former* employee by an elected, *governing* body member..by all rights, once termination paperwork has gone in, insurance doesn’t cover and former employees have no right to be on property of their former employer ..at least..that’s the way it operates in the private sector..Just sayin’..

  12. JC Says:

Is it possible to be ethically challenged in certain aspects of one’s life, yet be a prince among men in others?

PC, you have nothing but distain for Mr. Wallace, and perhaps he is completely deserving of your contempt. Yet, is it not possible that he is, has been, and continues to be a true friend to Mr. Samaras? Is it possible that their relationship is purely based on trust, respect, affection and mutual support? Is it possible that there is nothing untoward going on in that friendship?

When public officials/public figures embark upon unethical conduct, by all means let’s call them out! The original Column remarks were cited by Mimi as betraying a friendship-based bias by Mr. Wallace in favor of Mr. Samaras, a fact which apparently annoyed her. And what was the grave transgression alleged against Mr. Samaras - that he showed unusual diligence and devotion in doing his job, right up to the last minute and, perhaps, beyond.

I do not believe Mr. Samaras should have to end his distinguished career with such an absurd, childish issue thrown in his face. I guess his friend, Mr. Wallace, did not think it was appropriate either and he came to his friend’s defense.

To many, Mr. Wallace may be the Devil incarnate, but undeniably, he is also a loyal friend to Mr. Samaras!

I guess that type of complexity must irritate those who wish to categorize, label, and catalogue everyone who works is public life. Here’s a good guy. Here’s a bad guy. People are simply much too complex for that kind of treatment.

The bottom line on this non-story is that Mr. Wallace is not a one-dimensional human being. Whatever his alleged ethical challenges, in this instance he appears to have acted exactly as any friend would act and, of course, he used his bully pulpit in the process.

Feel free to condemn Mr. Wallace for any questionable conduct you please, but to condemn him for acting exactly the way you would expect your own true friend to act - that is an extreme arguement that totally ignores human nature!

K-R-S: Insurance? Now you are really reaching out for that one. Obviously you felt a need to grab onto anything to hold up your position. Unfortunately, the straw you relied on is much too thin to support your viewpoint and smacks of desperation.

  13. K-R-S Says:

JC..I seriously could give two hoots about this issue..but did like PC’s response..:0)

  14. Mill Girl Says:

Ah…Samaras..The gift that keeps on giving….

$10 bucks says he’ll be finding excuses to hang out at Lowell High for years to come. Maybe they’ll let he and Dave Conway (another buddy of Kendalls from high school) share an office.

  15. Lynne Says:

Sorry, but if you hold a high position on a newspaper, at least disclose your personal conflicts of interest (every time you shill for them). That way we can evaluate his statements accordingly. I bet the average Sun reader doesn’t know that information. This is my constant problem with that paper.

As a blog, we’ve declared our endorsement of Eileen Donoghue, and our headline pretty much says, hey, we’re Democrats. We allow people to evaluate our statements with that information, and it gives us credibility. If I were volunteering for Donoghue and didn’t disclose it, you’d all have my head on a platter. So why is this standard so damned hard for the Sun editorial staff?? Just askin’…

  16. Prince Charming Says:

“I did it for a friend.”

  17. Mimi Says:

One last comment to those of you who did not like this post and did not like some of the comments that agree with me…this has very little to do with Samaras.

You missed my point. I need to refine my writing, I guess. I cannot blame my teachers at LHS, I had some of the best.

My point is that for years, no decades, Kendall has used on many occasions his bully pulpit to promote his friends. I for one have had it. I truly believe that Kendall loves this City but I wish he would be a little bit more critical of his friends’ actions (at least the five alluded to by Prince Charming) and give others, like the unnamed School Committee member a break.

  18. New Lowellian Says:

I totally agree with you, Mimi. Kendall’s friends cannot be criticized without Kendall Wallace using all of his power and influence to destroy the one doing the criticizing…look what happened to Karla Baehr…her crime was being his unfortunate supervisor. She felt he needed to go, and Samaras powerful friends got rid of her instead. There is not a problem with being a loyal friend, but using your considerable power and influence over that friend’s boss was never in the best interest of children in Lowell.
