Assistant City Manager T.J. McCarthy, that is.
Sun’s breaking news section is reporting that “T.J. McCarthy, who has worked for the city for a decade, on Wednesday accepted an offer to work at UMass Lowell as its assistant director of buildings.”
McCarthy is Lowell’s Commissioner of the Department of Public Works.
Before we all begin spinning this story, remember that a couple years ago another Assistant City Manager’s have left after putting in their 10 years of service.
Needless to say (but I will say it anyway), this gives City Manager Bernie Lynch to re-organize DPW. Let the speculation begin as to who will take over.
And as far as McCarthy taking a $20K, sometimes you need to take a step backward in order to take 2 down the road.

Good Luck to TJ and I mean that sincerely. He has always done his job and loves this City. He puts in countless hours and has always been professional.

I agree with Mary. TJ has worked very hard for this city -putting in long hours during various crises. He may be taking a cut - but he will be better paid in the end and probably better appreciated. I have to wonder who will be put in his postion.

It can’t be fun to be a department head when your budget is being slashed and slashed over and over again.
TJ was the guy who put together the police/fire/dpw teams during the terrible flooding in 2006. He was a true asset to the city.
Best of luck.

Though the city manager may neither have appreciated nor respected TJ, he really has been a tremendous asset to the city and he will truely be missed once he is gone - his shoes will not be easy to fill.
He has worked countless hours behind the scenes to improve the city, and has been instrumental in the successful implementation of more projects than most remember. Sure, the guy is stressed, but given the way things “work” at DPW, you would be too! He has done quite a bit to clean up DPW, and while there is still lots more to clean up, no one can question the positive impact he will leave behind.
More likely than not, this spells the end of Winterfest. And when the next floods come, it may take DPW a little longer to respond.
Like many department heads, he has been forced to contend with repeated budget cuts, a demanding and impatient city manager, and countless unnecessary union-related issues. Given the looming fiscal crisis (come on now, you don’t really think this is going to get better any time within the next several years, do you?), I’m sure that what few talented department heads (and hard working staff) remain will undoutedly begin to look for better paying and/or less stressful work elsewhere, where they can really make a difference, and won’t have to deal with so much grief.
Let the brain drain begin.

Hey Sister,
Where are ‘the brains’ gonna go? And if they go, ya think there isn’t any talent out there?
Let’s try not to over hype this event, folks.

The Manager is not going to look out there, he already has picked the next hack. Drumroll please, Dave Blazon from Lands and buildings.

Rumor has it that the Manager’s secretary may be leaving for UMass as well. And as for Dave Blazon - Steve is oh so right. No one likes him.
