A further look at the numbers

by at 8:44 am.

As a follow-up to Lynne’s post on the release of the Donoghue and Dogherty donors list, I decided to review the names, or more precisely the city or town of the donors. These are my unofficial statistics. I say unofficial, because I printed the list and counted the names and towns; and no one reviewed my work. But if you have any questions on the validity of my findings, you can always check the candidates’ website.

Here are the numbers:

Donoghue: Total = 456; District = 264; Lowell = 213
Dogherty: Total = 418; District = 113; Lowell = 83

I do not have any problem with people raising money outside of the district. On many occasions I have donated to candidates that run outside of my district and even outside of Massachusetts; you may be a relative, a friend or colleague. Why not help them?

Both candidates had donations from the “usual suspects.” You know the business owners who give to everyone.

And if you are into statistics, 58% of Eileen’s donations are in-district while Chris‘ are 27%. How does this translate into votes? I do believe that these figures as well as lawn signs, bumper stickers, endorsements and volunteers do contribute to a successful campaign. To what degree? No one really knows.

By the way, Eileen will have one more financial contributor today, me. I have to go by the campaign headquarters to pick up something and I will drop off my check.

For those of you who have not been following this race on LiL, both Lynne and I are ardent supporters of Eileen’s campaign and we publicly endorsed her candidacy on this blog on June 1st.

    Lynne,

Money is money. What you aren’t publishing, either because you don’t have the information, or don’t want to put it out there is how much money the candidates have actually raised. Money helps to pay for the lawn signs, bumper stickers, etc… which primarily go to people from the district. Maybe Doherty has more friend than Eileen outside of the district because he has done work all over Middlesex county. He also seems to have a much stronger grassroots effort than she does, and that is what wins elections in the 21st century.

    Maggie:

We don’t have the dollar amounts; they are not available, yet. I am not sure how one measures ” grass root” strength before the election. BTW, I wrote this post, not Lynne.

  3. Smooth Says:

What is Donoghue doing with her campaign cash? I get a flyer from Doherty almost every single day in the mail and have not gotten a single one from her.

  4. Lynne Says:

MT: check the byline before you lambaste the wrong writer, please.

My guess is that Doherty is tapping into his big friends Leone’s and Meehan’s lists, as well as some hometown people. It explains the out of district stuff. But that’s a lotta out of district money - and that money don’t vote here.

“either because you don’t have the information, or don’t want to put it out there is how much money the candidates have actually raised”

Don’t be an ass. You KNOW we don’t have that info, no one but the campaigns do. (And yes, check your bylines next time will you?)

I’ve gotten Donoghue flyers. I am NOT getting any Doherty ones (though I suspect a purge…). So do with that what you will…

  5. MoneyTalks Says:

You still didn’t address my comment about his grassroots. Where was the big turnout for Eileen at the debate, because I went and saw maybe 15 people vs. at least twice that many for Doherty. Where are her canvassers? Do you think she can just win this race on name recognition, because I don’t see her proposing a lot of innovative ideas

  6. joe from Lowell Says:

Apparently, this particular grass only roots in other states.

How can you talk about Doherty’s great “grassroots support” when Donoghue has more than twice as many donors in the district? Money talks, indeed. As we learned in 2008, a very, very large number of small-money donations says, “Hey, look at me, I have grassroots support!”

So, where are they? Shouldn’t the “grassroots” candidate have a lot more donors?

I would just like to remind you the importance of checking your facts before you post information. It is unfair of you to keep posting incorrect information about Doherty prior to checking the validity of your statements. You have the right to post your opinions but in many cases the opinions on the site are not based on fact. I feel unless you are a direct part of the campaign you will never have the full story. Chris is a great candidate, he calls himself grass roots because he is, I have not seen Eileen knocking on over 3,000 doors herself. I have not seen Eileen holding signs at any towns, she has hardly shown ANY presence except in Lowell. In fact I have not seen her at all. Is she so confident she will win that she feels she does not need to try? Some people may take this to mean she does not really care. She does not seem to be working half as hard as Doherty has been. I just truly believe it is immoral to bash a person unless you have the absolute facts to back your statements up. You are clearly more interested in tearing him down than anything. One question….why do you Girls hate him so much? Do you even know the man?

  8. YesWeDid Says:

    Joe from Lowell,

Part of what won the election for Obama in 2008 WAS his grassroots efforts. McCain just stopped campaigning in some key battleground states, just as Ms. Donahue seems to have stopped campaigning in some key areas. It’s not all about money, it’s about who can get people to get out the vote, and I think Mr. Doherty is going to do that beter

  9. Mimi Says:

I do not hate man. I have not had a conversation with him but I really dislike the type of campaign he has chosen to run.

By the way, I think you and I have a different definition of grass roots. That’s o.k. we can differ on that. As for Eileen, she is out there campaigning hard; yes in and out of Lowell. I do not accept your claim that she is focusing in Lowell.

  10. Lynne Says:

I am constantly hearing from Eileen’s campaign on door knocking events, AND sign visibility (sigh - not that sign holding is actually that useful), and she is doing a lot in the towns. Trust me, they are out there doing the work. (Eileen has a lot of experience doing this district wide, since she very nearly bested Tsongas’ campaign doing it in a scant couple of months during the special election.)

“Jane” said: “I would just like to remind you the importance of checking your facts before you post information”

OK, what, exactly, are you talking about? What isn’t factual? The FACT is, you can count the number of donors in and out of district using the campaigns’ own lists. So what isn’t fact, exactly? Good lord, defensive much? Why don’t you dispute the facts rather than smear people who actually use them.

What Mimi said, Doherty is running a dishonest and disgusting campaign. Par for the course in Lowell, maybe, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. And even if I were not in the Donoghue camp, I am telling you, Doherty would have turned me right the hell off a long time ago with his tactics. I would have ended up voting for Eileen anyway given how he’s decided to run his campaign.

I love, LOVE how the memes come out every time…you people sound like broken records. LOL. “Eileen isn’t grassroots” “Doherty is grassroots” “Eileen has stopped campaigning” “Eileen isn’t even trying” - when all of that isn’t true. But you doth protest too much, and sound like it, too.

Talking points are so Bush-era, kids.

  11. doormat Says:

    Ellen’s done.

  12. Lynne Says:

That’s nice. You even know what her real name is!

    *rolls eyes*

I ALSO love how all the Doherty folks who comment on the blog are, basically, constantly commenting about Eileen. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…if I were Chris, I’d be annoyed that this race really isn’t about his candidacy, but about beating Eileen Donoghue.

    I mean, come on!

  13. joe from Lowell Says:

    YesWeDid,

I think you’re having a vocabulary issue, because your comment has nothing to do with the concept of “grassroots.”

  14. joe from Lowell Says:

Who’s Ellen? You mean the funny lesbian with the daytime talk show?

I’m sorry to hear she’s ending her show. I think she’s a hoot.
