If you want to point out a major factor in reducing gang presence more than a decade ago in Lowell, you have only to point to the teens themselves, and the United Teen Equality Center. And now their “Streetworker” program is getting national recognition because of a study being published by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
From UTEC’s press release:
The study’s interviews with UTEC staff and local community groups found five major contributing factors to UTEC’s success in the SW program: involvement of youth in hiring SWs; investment in quality training for the SWs; providing SWs with a comprehensive benefits package and team retreats to prevent staff turnover and burnout; establishment of community partnerships; and incorporation of peacemaking into outreach.
“These features should be considered both by communities with existing street outreach worker programs and by communities in the process of establishing one, as they have demonstrated importance for both program success and sustainability,” said Shannon Frattaroli, PhD, MPH, assistant professor with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and the paper’s lead author.
Congrats to an excellent community group on the getting the recognition it deserves. We know it works; now the rest of the nation’s cities can learn from UTEC.

Lynne, You failed to point out that Chris Doherty was a HUGE support to this program and that this is the type of program he would like to set up throughout the state. He clearly points this out in his campaign. See, he does do good things for our community!

Wow, talk about a crazy unrelated thread hijack. You need to learn blog etiquette.
“Kendra”, this looks like your first time posting in any thread that I can see. (Well, there’s a high probability you are the same person as “jane” here, seeing as your IP addresses match). But let me stop your lame thread hijacking with a little reality check.
A) I’m supposed to know the dude’s full bio in every detail? Now I’m being called out for something I don’t even know? Are you f-ing insane? Look at your tone. And see if maybe you should have addressed this like a normal person would. A normal person who wasn’t full of hate would have posted something like, “and my candidate X, he did Y in support of UTEC, something he’s very proud of.” You are obviously shilling here, and it’s more about ME than about HIM, not giving a crap about actually letting people know his accomplishments so much as trying to trip ME up. Well honey, since that’s been modus operandi for his entire campaign so it doesn’t surprise me, but it *is* very sad.
B) A LOT of people have had huge amounts of contributions to UTEC. So what? This is about UTEC, NOT about the damn state senate race. Other people exist you know.
Can we get BACK to praising UTEC the way this post was intended to be instead of attacking the blogger on behalf of your mean campaign? Thanks.

Seriously, (and this is coming from a person who only seems to agree with Lynne when it comes to city politics) what did this post have ANTHING to do with the Doherty vs. Donoghue race? It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. The post is about the kids that volunteer thier time and effort for doing good deeds. These kids could easily be out on the streets committing crimes or getting high somewhere but instead they are doing something good.
Kendra, or Jane, or whoever you really are behind the masks, stop being selfish. Bringing politics into this thread when it was clearly not about politics whatsoever only takes the discussion away from the teens at the center who are doing good for our community.
Shame on you.

About 10 years ago when we had a problem where I was working - UTEC came in , kind of wandered around and almost immediately lighted on the troublemakers engaging them in conversation. That particular group never bothered us again .

Ellen the liberal loving moonbat is done. She is a nobody.

Well Lynne, since you are a “professional” blogger maybe you should start using proper language and not swearing in your posts in order to get your point across. I only wanted to make reference to the fact you call Chris out for all of the bad things he does and how full of hate his campaign is. It would be nice to see you actually research facts, before you post your blogs. Your blogs are mostly based on your feelings, emotions and anger, you do not fully understand a lot of the issues because you let those emotions take over. Perhaps anger management classes would suit you. Also, my name is actually Kendra Jane, why would I be afraid to tell YOU my name? I have nothing to hide!

Who is “Ellen” and what is her role in UTEC?
September 2nd, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Kendra or Jane or Kendra-Jane or whatever your name is: will you *please* explain what the relationship is between the UTEC award and Chris Doherty or Eileen Donoghue? Lynne has the right to post what she wants! After all this *is* HER blog! She posted congratulations to UTEC for being recognized for the service they perform. Its annoying to readers like me to have a post hijacked by someone who has their own agenda and thinks everyone else should have the same agenda! If you want to adulate Chris Doherty start your own blog and you will have no complaints from me! But until then keep to the topic!

Unbelieveably, I have to side with Lynne on this one.

Your blog is not even worth my time,it is not even worth my time. I have much more positive things to read online.

Kendra your negativism detracts from the learning and enjoyment that this blog provides. I am so happy to learn that you will no longer participate!

The crazies all come out this time of year. It was worse when Cox was on his way out the door - trust me. Come Sept 15th, these drive bys will stop for a while.
I need to make people register, seriously. LOL
I particularly love the repeating of the beginning of the sentence there, coherence apparently not being a strong suit of this drive-by’er.

I’d like to meet this “Ellen the liberal loving moonbat.” I don’t know what she was doing, but now that she’s done with it, maybe she has some free time on her hands.

I remember. I suspect it’s the same people. The Kazanjianites are viewing the state senate primary as an opportunity for payback against one of the leaders of the Reformer faction.

LOL, sounds like historic medieval movements instead of contemporary politics…
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:54 pm
Also, in thinking about it, I love how I am now supposed to be held up to the ideal that if I post something about anything at all, I now have to go and research if Doherty ever had anything to do with it, because otherwise I’m just working off of “emotions and anger.”
So if I post about how the Farmer’s Market is today, I guess I have to go research if Chris Doherty ever contributed anything - time or money - at any time in the past before I am allowed to post it?
Awesome! I had so much spare time I didn’t know what to do with! I mean, I get paid so much to do this blog, and I don’t really do enough to earn that…
September 3rd, 2010 at 2:56 pm
BTW for the drive-by’ers, that was sarcasm, I don’t actually get paid to write this blog.
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:33 pm
LOL, sounds like historic medieval movements…
Silence, witch! You’ll not snare me with your honeyed words and your immoral admixture of herbs.
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Sorry, Lynne. I’ve been reading “Pillars of the Earth” and, well…that book really sucks you in.
September 3rd, 2010 at 6:49 pm
Hey, you’re talking to a girl who spends every other Saturday night pretending she’s a 13th century medieval mage, so…

Tell us more about that last comment - sounds like fun. And excuse me for being dense - but who is Ellen , the liberal loving moonbat? Is the moon full? Or is someone out there just “full of it” . ; )
September 7th, 2010 at 9:26 am
LOL Maggie.
We do role playing games on the weekend, specifically a game called Ars Magica right now. It’s a setting of historic 1220 Europe but where magic, faeries, demons, and angels really exist. Whatever the medieval people believed, is fair game for the setting…
It’s a lot of fun and a very social activity. The Mr. and I have been gaming together since before we were dating, oh, a loooong time ago.
