“Hicks” - Parsing to the Point of Crazy Stupid

by at 10:37 am.

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to listen to our Left Ahead! podcast interview of Elizabeth Warren. (If not, please do, we went over a lot of important stuff!)

I wasn’t going to write about this, because it wasn’t even worth the pixels it was printed on to rebut the stupidity, but now I just have to express my snark on the subject. The Mass GOP, whose previous efforts to take Elizabeth Warren (who apparently, and with good reason, scares them out of their Chinos) quotes out of context failed so perfectly, thought they had another winner with their “but Warren used the word HICK! OMGWTF!!!!11″ press release. It’d be hilarious watching the MA GOP implode, trying to desperately spot their next Warren funny comment to hang some fake outrage on, if this Senate race wasn’t so serious and we weren’t in a terrible economy and so, need to choose our next leaders carefully.

So the moral of the story here is, the GOP would do anything…anything to distract you from looking at the issues straight on, because they know they are plum out of ideas Americans agree with. And they know Warren’s background, history, smarts, and down-to-earthedness is Kryptonite to Scott Brown’s reelection chances should he face her in the general election.

Hopefully this embeds - if not, view the NECN video that talks about this (it’s the second story in). Apparently, some conservatives blogs have picked up on the MA GOP’s call for outrage, and other websites have picked it up as well (this is a good story here).

I cannot fathom how this helps the MA state Republican party. All it’s doing is driving traffic to our podcast, which had a lot of really great moments where Warren states her platform. If people stop to listen to what she has to say, the MA GOP has failed utterly. Once again, they spread the good news about Warren’s words FOR her campaign. All I have to say is, keep helping us, MA GOP!

Oh, and as someone who came from a hick town herself, I was not insulted. Yes, I am a hick by birth too. Hicks unite!

Is now the time to order HICKS FOR ELIZABETH bumper stickers?

    Good stuff. Thanks.

  2. Brian Flaherty Says:

Come on - Dems do the same thing, Take one comment, turn it inside out, parse it, hyperventilate, etc.

  3. Right in Lowell Says:

When the Dems do it, it’s the right thing. When the others do it, it’s the wrong thing. Overreaction as usual, but consistent.

  4. Jack Says:

Where does Scott Brown’s donations come from?:Scott Brown Begs David Koch For Money

I’m not surprised that Warren is leveraging her national name recognition to gather support from progressive who prefer to make her 1 of 100 senators, as opposed to Brown.

  5. Lynne Says:

Usually when R’s do it, it’s with an overtone of racism or sexism. There’s a lot of it, so yeah, we point it out. Or when it’s not EVIDENT that it’s tongue in cheek (electric fence - is it or is not not a policy proposal, Cain?), or else just despicable even if it is meant to be a joke (Macaca anyone?).

This was obviously self-deprecating, meant to address the criticism that she’s both from out of state and out of touch because of it, and an elitist prof from Harvard (or, even, elite Harvard-educated, which Brown knows she is not).

You all KNOW that’s how the R’s are portraying her, so it’s time to drop the victim act.

In their defense, it’s usually not intentional. It just comes out that way. A lot.

  7. Miles Perhoure Says:

Y’all got the word wrong…it’s not “hick”, it’s “elite”. It’s a small window to her self image. Thanks for nibbling at the bait anyway!

  8. Jack Says:

I wonder how many Americans dream of their kids becoming as “elite” as Liz Warren?

How is it that zombies that worship Wall Street con artists and Banksters deplore the academics of the world? I’ve been told by Local 56 Pile Drivers and Local 88 “Sand Hogs” to “Work smarter not harder.” What am I missing?

  9. Right in Lowell Says:

Obviously, her referral to herself as a hick was to deflect what she really has become… elite. How can anyone defend the exorbitant salaries of ‘academics’? Is a part time job at Harvard, no matter how edecated she is, really work 3K-4K?
Keep trying to paint the tea party as racist; it’s working against you.

  10. Jack Says:

Wake up, please. In America, pay is commensurate with value?

Highest Paid Pornstars – Huge Porn Star Salaries

This one’s a no-brainer. Jenna, billed as the world’s most famous pornstar, is a multi-millionaire. She’s retired from performing, so you can forget about the fees she gets per scene. Not that she still needs to do them anyway. ClubJenna, the porn company she founded with her ex-husband Jay Grdina, had estimated revenues of $30 million, with profits of approximately half that, in 2005. Playboy has since acquired the company she founded for an undisclosed sum, which I can only guess would be a rather neat sum.

Stephen Hawking should make less than Tom Brady or Warren Buffet or Rupert Murdoch?

  11. joe from Lowell Says:

Obviously, her referral to herself as a hick was to deflect what she really has become… elite.

Somebody stop that woman! She’s at the very top of her profession!

The word you were going for is “elitist,” not “elite.” To say somebody is “elite” is to say that they are among the very best at what they do.

But, then, trying to paint Elizabeth Warren as an elitist would just make you look silly, so I guess you’re left trying to make people hate her for being smart and getting to the top.

Keep trying to paint the tea party as racist; it’s working against you.

The Tea Party’s popularity is dropping faster than Carl Crawford’s, and yes, that’s largely because of the barely-suppressed-at-best racism.

  12. Magnolia Says:

Elizabeth Warren doesn’t even come close to being a hick. Thiscomes from a true hick from Arkansas.

  13. Mr. Lynne Says:

“How can anyone defend the exorbitant salaries of ‘academics’?”

Really? Do you have any idea what she could be making if she left academia behind and just practiced law as an expert in contract law? Do you have any idea what kind of poverty it takes to get started in academia? It was my original intended career path until I did the math.

  14. Magnolia Says:

Mr. Lynne - The only exorbitant salaries for academics are for those with the fancy title at the very top. But you already know that. The rest of them struggle to make ends meet. My youngest’s engineering professor tried to get him to go that way because he was ( and hopefully stiil is) very good at explaining things My son spoke at several conferences and enjoyed doing it. But, in the end, he went with what he calls “the real world” . Proud to say he is now making 6 figures and loves his job. Now if he would ony get a job closer to home. Sighhhhh.
