I think this is a big deal: Lowell Voter Turnout Study

So, does Derek Mitchell:

The data speaks for itself.

We can change this. We should change this.

I think if you break it down into neighborhood what do you find? The areas with the highest voter turnout are also the neighborhoods where city councilors live.

You want to get out the vote throughout the city then change the charter to a council voted by district with a few at large councilors. Nothing else needs to change.

I am proposing a system like the one used in Worcester which is also Plan E.

We certainly can not rely on local media to get out the vote because let’s face it, very few people in Lowell read or listen to local media these days so it will take a neighborhood by neighborhood approach and the best way to do that will be with district representation. It would be less expensive as well.

My guess is that this map looks exactly like every other mid to large city in America. I’m not saying that its a good thing but its the reality of modern America.

  3. Joe Says:

A few hours ago I voted in the Lowell Sun online poll. I was voter 1501. That’s a very good sign that turnout might be a bit higher on Tuesday. I know that the poll is not very important but that seems like a high number.

  4. Jack Says:

Well, since we now allow marriage equality in Modern America, I have my hopes up, Joe.

As for the Sun poll, I voted twice, as did Mr.Lynne. Online polls are subject to freeping and other online hobgoblins. So, the poll is crap. Period.

  5. Joe Says:

It’s still a bit surprising. I honestly thought that the younger downtown candidates would have dominated this poll. Anything online is their home turf.

  6. Jack Says:

You’re forgetting, Joe. The local union members are active in the Sun online forums. That is their turf.

Further, if I’m a candidate, with a week to go until a prelim, which could help validate my candidacy, WHY would give a rat’s ass about a meaningless Sun poll. Which, of course, is only their to drive up the Sun’s online metrics, so the can justify their existence to Denver?

A wizened operative, cares less about narrative, spun to the limited readership and listenership of the local whored out, corporate media, and more about generating my own buzz via canvasses, house parties, forums & meet ‘n greets.

Let the machine pols prostrate themselves to The Sun & WCAP’s little big shots.

    Silly rabbits.

  7. Joe Says:

I am not a fan of the Lowell sun but I do not have the intense hatred that many on this site seem to have. I know this poll is not important but the bottom four in that poll is going to look a lot like the bottom four on Tuesday. Do I think that rourke is going destroy the field on Tuesday ? No. But I will say its an impressive number. Also I didn’t think Rita Mercier would do well in this poll. This is not her strong suit. She was third when I voted. I have already received door knockers today from Rourke and Stacy Hargiss. I’m rambling now but I’m just a fan of politics. Pre elections are always fun

  8. Eric J Says:

It’s not just hatred, it’s garden variety obsession. For a corporate dead-tree rag, it generates allot of pixels on this site and rents much space in the minds of the blog-keeper(s).
Now I think the paper sucks and its web site is pitiful.
I don’t think every word it prints is tainted by the big money in Denver (or in Lowell!)

  9. Jack Says:

I can’t argue Eric J’s point, too much.

I’m not obsessed with the Sun, per se. I am intrigued , to the point of obsession, at how hollow their argumentation is and how willing so many Lowellians are to guzzle the codswallop.

It’s a process that I study. In that study, experiment, if you please, I throw monkey wrenches.

Lowell is a fascinating test tube.

FYI. I abide by the Hippocratic Oath. Campi? JMac?

Let’s put it this way. I volunteer to do this.

  10. Lynne Says:

Hey, Campy started hating on me first. We preempted him on some things and he didn’t like it. Also, they just suck at their primary job (if you actually read what Lyle the Cub writes, it’s really just gawd awful). I’ve been the target of the Sun as have many good folks. I like logic and facts, and the Sun often operates without either.

If wanting a good newspaper in my city that does its Fourth Estate job right is an obsession, fine, call it that if you want.

  11. Joe Says:

I’ve met Derek Mitchell. He was a really nice guy and i intend to vote for him. That being said the still shot from the above video is funny. He looks like the Incredible Hulk about to choke someone out.
