The Gerry Nutter appointment political battle continues. Yesterday, I as well as Jack, Chris and others were involved in discussion on facebook.
Also, Gerry was on the Saturday morning show to explain himself and speak about under what conditions he will participate in future shows. He did ask the Ethics Commission for a ruling and received one. For the record, I called in and publicly expressed my support for Gerry’s appointment once more.
So, I was not surprised that the lead item in the Sun’s The Column was about the appointment and vote.
I am not going to repeat what Jack laid out in great detail what occurred back in 2011. The facts are being misrepresented in the Column. Please read Jack’s post below to understand the context, the chronological order and the players.
The wrath of the Column was aimed at CC Rita Mercier, Jon Leahy and Marty Lorrey. Interesting!
Why not the other four Councilors who voted in the affirmative? Well, CC Bill Martin gave a brief statement “the perfect candidate does not likely exist.” Is there another local elected official that is more comfortable in their own skin than this guy?
Mayor Patrick Murphy never listened to the drum beats coming from the paper so they have stopped trying to make him listen.
As for CC Joe Mendonca and Vesna Nuon, if I were them I am feeling pretty good about myself as a representative of the people. You see the Sun either thinks that they cannot be dictated to or that the people who read the Sun are not their supporters or constituency. If that is the case, then both CC Mendonca and Nuon represent those of us who are not “prominent Lowellians,” whose voices and concerns are not covered by the paper; whose political influence is irrelevant to the paper’s agenda. That is freedom.
Now back to CC Mercier, Leahy and Lorrey.
First and foremost, CC Mercier will finish first in November. Those who vote for her will not judge her by one vote or even two or three votes. They are judging her by her body of work; her style of representing the people, her love of retail politics and her accessibility. She is so right when she said “‘The people who say they won’t vote for me now would not have voted for me anyway,’ she said.”
As for CCs John Leahy and Marty Lorrey, the paper wants/expects them to be like CCs Rodney Elliott and Ed Kennedy and when they “misbehave” they are disappointed and will let them hear about it.
The paper wants them to look to their right, not at the gallery and certainly not glance to the guy on their left.
By the way, I found it interesting that both CC Elliott and Kennedy would not let nominee Nutter speak prior to the vote. When has a citizen been denied the ability to speak on his behalf? How many I do not recall any one being denied that opportunity; I could be wrong.
There have been 9 articles written about Gerry’s appointment in the paper, including the editorial. The Sun also published a letter to the editor from another blogger criticizing the CM and Gerry’s appointment. To date, I have not seen Gerry’s letter printed in the Sun (yes, both Dick and LiL did print it). If I am mistaken, please let me know and I will link to it.
Also, can just once The Column identify who “many observers” is. This person whose first name is Many and last name Observers is not listed in the any data base. Somehow they only speak to the Column and they use this moniker. So it is difficult to assess their comment when they chose to remain anonymous. Are they a sock puppet?
