Well, I did it. I waded into the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast for the first time ever. I got to sit at the “citizen media group” table, the sign for which, according to seat mate and fellow blogger Greg Page (who was scoring the joke brackets a couple seats away), drew a lot of questions as people walked by.
I took the liberty of shooting a few videos and posting on YouTube. My camera angle was bad and so was my use of the camera, which I was still figuring out how to film video with. Apologies in advance. Luckily, there is an official Channel 22 taping coming eventually and I highly recommend catching that if you want better footage.
It’s all on the flip:
We start with the worst act first…it might not stoop to a Sad Sack Santa, but it was close at times. Although Elliot drew a couple of mild zingers, the room was awfully quiet at times in response to his awkward pauses.
[Update: Wow! A bunch of the photos (at least three, so far) that Elliott was using were lifted from the Lowell Shallot website. So the awful awkward that was Elliott’s routine wasn’t even all his own. But it does speak to my assertion that the LS was never really that funny. Jack has the deets.]
I was told Golden wasn’t as good as previous years. Maybe go back to the props?
Rep Murphy had some terrible but kind of amusing Photoshopped images. I wish people would leave Photoshopping to the experts…that stuff is dangerous in the wrong hands…
Finally, out of all the state Reps, Nangle surprisingly was the funniest, although some of the items he joked about are things about him that utterly infuriate me. I think we can safely say that even he admits he doesn’t really live in the district any more.

Joke off the cuff by Coakley: "was worried I wouldn't get all the Lowell in-jokes from the mayor, but it seems no one else did." ZING!!— LeftinLowell.com (@leftinlowell) March 17, 2014
Getting to answer the question: is Charlie Baker funny? Not really… He went sentimental about Girls Inc (the benefactee) etc.— LeftinLowell.com (@leftinlowell) March 17, 2014
All I can say is, Baker is pretty meh as a speaker. Not just saying that because he's republican. He's really kinda… *yawn*— LeftinLowell.com (@leftinlowell) March 17, 2014
Charlie Baker inadvertently funny; signed off "Happy Thanksgi–St. Patrick's Day."— LeftinLowell.com (@leftinlowell) March 17, 2014
At least it seemed inadvertent. I mean, I suppose it could have been planned but I don’t see Baker pulling that off.
OK, that’s all I’ve got. There is, like I said, an official production done with real cameras manned by the student crew from the education channel; I am so envious those kids got to this in high school. What a cool experience!
